Henry Chase, the president of Chase Nurseries, erected the shingle-covered house in 1914. A tapered chimney and retaining wall of uncut stone distinguish the exterior. Two stone piers support an overhanging gable. Inside, the homes exceptional craftsmanship, evident in paneled walls, coffered ceilings, and built-in alcoves, personifies the popular Arts and Crafts style of the time.
    
The house was built 25 years after the first of four Chase brothers relocated from Rochester, New York to establish a wholesale nursery business that thrived in the warmer climate of the Deep South. Henry Chase served as president of the city council, mayor and school board member. He received the city's Distinguished Citizen Award in 1959.  Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gillespie currently own the home.  Mr. Gillespie is the Madison County Commission
Chairman.
