Chautauqua is a festival that began in the early 1900's on the school grounds of East Clinton Street School.  It consisted of traveling performance arts groups as well as many of the local singing, dancing, storytelling, and musical groups.  East Clinton has carried on the tradition of holding a citywide festival each year in commemoration of this event.  Unfortunately the school was forced to cancel this festival about 15 years ago due to lack of support.  We began working in 2001 to begin the tradition of Chautauqua again.  Our goal is to have this be an annual city wide festival that the people of Huntsville look forward to each fall as they have in the past.  Chautauqua is a fabulous venue to focus on Huntsville history, the performance arts, unique local organizations, and the surrounding community.  Check the Events Calendar for details on this year's celebration.

105 North Side Square- Warren & Simpson, P.C.

This building has been on the square since 1856 and for most of that time has been a mercantile. The building was Arnold's Clothing and then became Avco Finance Company and Alvin Blackwell's office. Alvin Blackwell who leased it to Fred Simpson from 1980 to 1990 purchased it. In 1990 Mr. Simpson purchased the building and began the 8year extensive renovation. The
original heart pine floors were uncovered under layers of flooring. Part of the plaster in the back hall was retained over the brick to show the thickness of the plaster. The brick in the window frames had been chiseled to be rounded and then covered with plaster. Clifford Fountain, a local carpenter, did all of the woodwork, except the doors, on the premises. When it was completed, the building had been restored to resemble a 19th century law office.

Some interesting features of the office are artwork of Mr. Simpson that are displayed in the offices, a hidden door in Mr. Simpson's office that leads to the loft and a stained glass scale of justice in the conference room.
