On June 21 & 22, 2003 from
1-6 pm, the Huntsville Botanical Garden will feature a fundraiser designed to
thrill local garden enthusiasts. Three private town gardens in South
Huntsville and three private country gardens in Hazel Green will be open to the
public. I've previewed the gardens for you, but I urge everyone to get out
on Saturday and Sunday and explore for themselves. Even though a picture
is worth a thousand words.....these pictures really don't do these gardens
justice--you really need to see them for yourself!
Jim & Liz Kennedy, 737 Mira
Vista Drive, Huntsville
This pretty corner lot displays
the fruition of love and learning (Jim is a Master Gardener, but Liz is the
real gardener in this family!). Over the years they've built a pond, a
brick garden house, a fence and an arbor, laid the flagstone and planted every
riotous Lady Banks rose cascading over the delightful brick garden house.
Plants have been used wisely. Huge willow oaks provide a shady shelter for
generous plantings of oak leaf and French hydrangeas, masses of azaleas, hostas
and astilbe. This quiet and lush refuge is a certified Backyard Wildlife
Habitat. The loss of a large shade tree has provided an opportunity to
plant a colorful sun garden filled with favorite old-fashioned perennials and
annuals selected to attract birds and butterflies. In this backyard, Jim
& Liz can sit a spell, greet the neighbors and enjoy their labor of love.
