On June 21 & 22, 2003 from
1-6 pm, the Huntsville Botanical Garden will feature a fundraiser designed to
thrill local garden enthusiasts. Three private town gardens in South
Huntsville and three private country gardens in Hazel Green will be open to the
public. I've previewed the gardens for you, but I urge everyone to get out
on Saturday and Sunday and explore for themselves. Even though a picture
is worth a thousand words.....these pictures really don't do these gardens
justice--you really need to see them for yourself!
Bobby & Rita Crain, 10022
Green View Drive, Huntsville
This picture-perfect landscape has been featured in Southern
Living, and is much beloved by a hoard of happy grandchildren. Broad
sweeps of red New Guinea impatiens, a stately magnolia, and a lawn easily
mistaken for a putting green, make a formal statement, but this garden is all
about entertaining. A beautifully crafted screen, draped with delicate
pink fairy roses, and one of the finest Natchez crepe myrtles you'll ever see
lead to a veritable backyard oasis. A charming pool and pool house are
screened by a thick wall of euonymus. Note the splendid stag horn fern
hanging in the oak tree. More magic awaits as the patio opens into a
fabulous southern garden. Curved stacked stone walls contain mass
plantings of pachysandra, delicate plum yew, astilbe, azaleas, Lenten rose, and
dwarf nandinas all thriving in the cool filtered shade of ancient trees.
All of this, and the pretty greenhouse, tell us that Bobby is a very serious and
dedicated gardener who will settle for nothing less than picture perfect.
