A few weeks ago, six reviewers
decided to try out the new Main Street Café, to see if it measured up to the
rave reviews we had heard previously.
Dale Cassidy of Madison works
for Agilent Technologies, as does Phyllis Rogers of Grant.
Mary Barksdale, from Decatur, works for Hewlett-Packard Co., Lee Lanier
working for ADL lives here in Huntsville. Joan
Priest lives in Kelso, Tennessee and works for Agilent, also.
Cathey Carney of Hewlett-Packard and Old Huntsville magazine brought her
camera to take pictures of the group.
We arrived at 11:10 early
so as to get a good seat. Parking
is a problem you may have to drive around a bit.
It was already packed, and stayed that way during the entire lunch.
The waitress came right over, gave us excellent service the entire hour,
even though she was very busy with her tables. The building is in the old
Madison Jail and city hall, and has been renovated in a very quaint
manner.
Now to the food.
First of all, we had to try the hot spice tea and it was excellent a
secret mixture but delicious. Then
we checked out the menu and decided on our entrees. None of the selections cost over $7.45, and there were a
couple written on a board at the front of the restaurant however, we chose
off the menu. 3 of us chose the Miss
Daisys Beef Casserole, beef baked with mushrooms, tomatoes, water
chestnuts, noodles and cheese, served with house salad and hot yeast roll.
This got excellent reviews from all who chose it flavorful, hot, in a
bowl with a wonderful, fresh yeast roll like you used to get at the Bon Aire
Restaurant.
Cathey chose the Poulet de
Normandie, which was baked chicken cooked into a wonderful dressing mixed with
mushroom sauce and melting cheese, served with hot green beans, an excellent
cranberry congealed salad and a giant yeast roll.
All of the portions were just right, everyone was full including our male
guest Lee.
Lee chose the Chicken and Broccoli Casserole, stating that it was one of the best chicken casseroles he had ever had. It was combined with a cream sauce with just a hint of curry., green beans came with it and a giant Yeast Roll! You can tell the yeast rolls won the votes of All our group. Those who got salads claimed that they were very fresh and crispy, and especially liked the Bleu Cheese dressing.
We had heard about the
Strawberry Pretzel Salad dessert so 3 of us tried that, with one diving into the
Mississippi Mud Cake, and one trying the Derby Pie.
The smallest of all was the Derby pie, that would seem like a Pecan pie
without the pecans, with a chocolate crust and chocolate chips on the bottom. It was rich but delicious.
The Mississippi Mud Cake was a
chocoholics delight, large and oozing with rich chocolate and a layer of
marshmallow cream. But the
Strawberry Pretzel dessert was delightful a crust made of crushed pretzels
and who-knows-what-else, topped with thick strawberry Jell-O with an inch layer
of what tasted like sweetened cream cheese.
It was Heaven and a perfect end to an excellent meal!
Note: The restaurant is only open until 2:00 so my advice go early, just to make sure you get parked and seated. They are open for dinner Tuesdays through Saturdays from 5 to 9 p.m. And Main Street Café does accept reservations, which is rare nowadays.
