The People in Maple Hill Cemetery (continued)

If you stroll the grounds, you may find some of these famous and infamous people, a few animals, beautiful monuments, and several mausoleums:

Doctors, Lawyers, and Ministers

1. Dr. Thomas Fearn (1789-1863) was a physician, planter, state legislator, and trustee of the University of Alabama. He was famous for his pioneering work in the medicinal use of quinine. Along with his brother, he owned and improved the Huntsville water system and was a instrumental in developing the Indian Creek Navaigation Company.

2. Carl August Grote, M.D. (1887-1964) was a physician and the first Madison County health office. He ended recurrent typhoid eipidemics by chlorinating the water system. Dr. Grote chaired the committee to finance and build Huntsville Hospital.

3. Dr. David Moore (1787-1845) was a physician, planter, and state legislator. He was the family physician and personal friend of General Andrew Jackson.

4. Rev. Jerimiah F. Trecy (1826-1872) was the pastor and Founding Father (1860-72) of St. Mary's Church of the Visitation.

5. Leroy Pope (1764-1845) was a lawyer and planter and knows as the "Father of Huntsville" for his contribution to the physical, economic and political development of the town. He was Chief Justice of the first Madison County court.

6. John William Walker (1783-1823) was a lawyer and president of the 1819 Constitutional Convention, first U. S. Senator from Alabama, father of LeRoy Pope Walker and son-in-law of LeRoy Pope with whom he shares a tombstone.

7. Leroy Pople Walker (1817-1884) was a lawyer, state legislator, Brigadier General CSA, and first Secretary of War of the Confederate States of America when the order was issed to fire on Fort Sumter, starting the Civil War.

8. Clement Claiborne Clay (1816-1882) was a lawyer, state legislator, and U. S. Senator. He was imprisoned with Jefferson Davis in Fortress Monroe.
