On Saturday, September 21, 2002, The Burritt Museum Guild will hold their first Monte Sano Mountain Homes Tour. Six homes and one garden are featured on the tour. For tickets, call 256-536-2882. The gardens at Les Forgerons compliments the stately Louis XIII French chateau that is the home of Linda and Mark Smith. Designed by the well-known husband and wife landscape architects, Mary Palmer and Hugh Dargen of Atlanta, the gardens are situated on three levels--all with spectacular views.
The upper level comprises the formal gardens which include the White, Secret, and Armillary gardens. A sweeping double staircase leads down to the pool level where rose topiaries accent the corners of the pool. In the nave of the staircase is a fountain with a bronze putti riding a swan, surrounded by mythical dolphins and a winged Pegasus. Beyond the pool is the English Garden with its richly varied colored and texture and a fine stretch of lawn where all the grandchildren love to play when visiting.
