EAA Chapter 190
Experimental Aircraft Association

Jim Harchanko is President of Chapter 190 of the local EAA. He tells us what the organization and the airport at Moontown mean to him and the other members:

"Moontown Airport is a National Treasure! It has an ambience of a by-gone era that is suggestive of the early days of aviation. The grass landing strip sets the stage for an encounter with the past. This is followed by the friendly, laid back Southern hospitality of the folks who spend a lot of time at Moontown. These are the folks who just like airplanes! There are student pilots, instructor pilots, sport aviation pilots, professional pilots, and there are those who like to build from plans or kits, those who restore, those who maintain, those who are working on their A&P, and others who just like to be in an aviation environment and support aviation activities.

A stroll through the airport is the best way to grasp the breadth of capabilities and persons associated with EAA and sport aviation at Moontown.

Several restoration projects are underway, including our Chapter's Taylorcraft and Dale Brown's Taylorcraft restoration which is nearing completion, Paul Jacob's Aeronica Champ, Steve Brown's Piper J3 Cub, and Fred Frank's Cherokee 140. At the goal line are a beautifully restored Stearman, a J3 clipped wing cub, an Aeronica L-16, and a Luscombe. Additionally, two AN-2's, two YAK-52's, and 3 great looking Swifts stand out to identify this airport. Home-built projects (located at the airport) include four completed Mini-max's, a Mitchell Wing and a LongEZ being built from plans. In addition, several EAA members have home based projects on-going including RV's, KR2S, RANS S-9/S-12/S-17, Mini-500 Helo, several Airbikes, Waga Bond, and a Mustang II. Mid-field are a half-dozen sailplanes and at the West end are a dozen ultralights. Several hangar construction projects are underway by individuals that contribute to the early-days-of-aviation/hands-on ambience.

In addition to the planes and people that make Moontown unique is the special supportive relationship between EAA and the airport management. As EAA members, we can feel that we are a part of this airport. Thanks to the airport management, George and Shirley Myers, our EAA Chapter has been provided the land space for our kitchen/dining facility and the use of existing lounge facilities for our meetings and fly-ins. EAA members are a key part of sport aviation. They provide the support structure needed for fly-ins and perform a great community service for those who want to experience sport aviation. "
