The building, gardens and atmosphere look incredible and my wife (who moved here from Japan five years ago) didn't have to see the sign, she knew it was Japanese right away.  We planned a Friday night date there and were very displeased.  We expected quiet and relaxed atmosphere.  Here's what we got:
1) Seated by an emergency exit that was blocked by stacks of chairs and hi-chairs.
2) The waiter made us feel weird when we only wanted water (not alcohol).
3) The waiter came five times in the first ten minutes, each time surprised that we weren't ready to order.  He took the unwelcome liberty of reaching into my wife's menu to point out what she should get.  My wife politely commented that she didn't like what he had chose and being Japanese, she knew what her favorites on this menu would be.  The waiter suggested she was wrong and should try it anyway.
---By this time, our quiet date has turned into a constant battle with the waiter instead of time to enjoy each other.
4) My wife ordered Sushi Regular and I ordered Rainbow Roll, Tuna Roll and Tempura Udon.  The sushi came first and immediately my wife noticed a clam sushi that was brown that should be pink.  She was appalled and worried that it was spoiled.  She went to the sushi chef (who apparently didn't speak Japanese) and demanded an explanation.  The chef verified that it was clam and didn't understand that it should be pink and not brown.  Even if it's supposed to be brown, if he knew sushi, he should have been able to explain why it wasn't like the sushi by that name in Japan.
--This shattered our confidence in their sushi and gave us fear that we might get sick from something that wasn't fresh.  That, combined with the waiter convinced us to leave...our date was ruined.
--We spoke to the manager and an older Japanese woman who assisted the manager, both of which apologized and accepted our decision to walk out.  However, neither did anything to keep the waiter from chasing us into the parking lot and demanding that we pay for the meal.
--We were infuriated and spoke very loudly that we'd never return because of how we had been treated.  Despite my Japanese wife being irate and teared-up in front of all their customers coming in from the parking lot, the waiter continued.
--I tried several times to explain to the waiter why we were upset.  To this point, we had been polite and not confronted the waiter about his attitude.  The waiter cut me off every time, completely uninterested in why we were not happy and not really even interested in getting the money because when I pulled my credit card and headed back to the restaurant, he stopped me and continued to complain about us walking out.
--Our visit to Nikko was an entire disgrace to the Japanese people who have always been the most polite and over-achieving restaurant managers that I've ever seen (in Japan and in the U.S.).  Nikko's look and atmosphere gives a great Japanese feeling, but the people inside are not Japanese and have no idea how to operate a real Japanese restaurant despite their claims to authenticity.
