The DICKSON-NELSON home at 414 Echols Avenue in Huntsville was the home of Merchant John Dickson, who bought the Federate style house in 1853. He served as captain in the Confederate army and died in the Battle of Franklin in 1864. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Roberson had the house dismantled and reconstructed it on Echols Avenue. The lot was originally part of the Pope-Patton-Echols property and has an illustrious history. During the Civil War when the Union army occupied Huntsville, the army erected a fortification on this hill, the highest ground overlooking the town. Some of the rocks in the boundary walls are the remains of the old ramparts.
