January 2001 is proving to be an important date in the history of the literary world.  Huntsville Editor and Publisher, Mary Alderman, has launched a new quarterly national magazine "celebrating creative expression"  called, appropriately, The American Muse.

This black-and-white glossy printed magazine is designed to fill a urgent need in the American arts world.  It is a publishing venue for aspiring literary and visual artists.  The magazine also showcases nationally-known artists, poets, photographers and writers.  The American Muse strives to balance creativity with journalistic features,  national museum schedules, competitions, fine arts news and briefs, and photographic flashbacks from a specific year in each issue.  The magazine is an effort to bridge communication from coast to coast on happenings in the arts.

Many residents of the Tennessee Valley contributed to this new literary effort. The cover of the premiere issue featured  model Holly Hale in  "Nocturne," an award winning photograph by Pat Gardner of Huntsville.  The Artist Profile features Mutt Suttles, of Meridianville, Alabama and Pulitzer prize contender Bonnie Roberts of Huntsville offers her poetry.   International artist, Nall, a part-time resident of Huntsville, is a consultant for The American Muse and will be writing an article for each issue.

But this is a national magazine--and there are lots of contributions from national writers and artists as well. In the first issue, Playwright John Aiello writes an article on Doors'keyboardist Ray Manzarek and Beat poet Michael McClure called "The Marriage of Rock and Poetry."

The American Muse is meant to "inspire, and celebrate, artistic creativity," says Editor Mary Alderman.  One look at this new 64 page magazine will make those interested in the arts, whether as patrons or artists, stand up and take notice.

The American Muse is sold at Barnes & Noble, in bookstores and newsstands throughout the nation, and on many college campuses.  Visit The American Muse website for subscription information and contribution guidelines.
