ACTS, the Alabama Conference of Theatre and Speech, holds a  state competition for community theaters. Renaissance Theatre competed against Madison Children’s Theatre.   For the THIRD consecutive year, Renaissance will represent the State of Alabama.

Harvey Fierstein’s Widows and Children First, the third play of the Torch Song Trilogy, was chosen to proceed to the American Association of Community Theaters Region 10 competition held at the Southeastern Theatre Conference. A monetary award of $800.00 was given to Renaissance Theatre in congratulations.

In 2000, Renaissance Theatre represented the state with the wildly popular production of Holy Ghosts by Romulus Linney. The comedy/drama about the off-beat members of a snake handling church won the community theatre competition’s Best Production, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress among other commendations for acting and direction.

In 2001, Renaissance’s production of Master Class by Terrence McNally proceeded to the Southeastern Conference, and once again Renaissance Theatre performed well to place third overall at the conference and receive a Best Actress nomination for Natalie Rushing and her performance of Maria Callas.

Widows and Children First will compete against ten other productions in the largest region in the United States. Productions will be adjudicated based on the overall production quality, choice of material and the modification of the material for the allotted time limit. The acting, direction and technical aspects of the production will be scrutinized and critiqued.

The Southeastern Theatre Conference will be held March 6-10, 2002 in Mobile, Alabama. ACTS joins Huntsville and arts organizations throughout the state in wishing Renaissance Theatre the best of luck!

Widows and Children First will be produced February 28, March 1, 2, @ 8 PM and March 3 @ 2:30 PM at the theater located at 1216B Meridian Street to raise necessary funds to send the show to Mobile. Please call 536-3117 for further information on the tickets and to make a tax deductible donation for this purpose.
