If you want to take a short excursion out of Huntsville for some sightseeing and adventure, I suggest you head on over to Grant, Alabama. It's about a 40 minute drive from Huntsville. Now there's more than one reason to go. Besides Cathedral Caverns, you'll find a Bed & Breakfast with gift shop on Main Street, an antique store, and a wonderful place to eat--Mi Mi's Cafe.
Barbara
Sims is the owner of Mi Mi's Cafe, nestled into a charming 1930's bungalow on
Main Street. Barbara is an established cook and restaurant owner in Grant,
having owned and run the Triple K Restaurant and worked at Burger Barn
in Grant. Mi Mi's Cafe offers a variety of soups, sandwiches,
salads, and beverages--including Mi Mi's special Citrus Tea. On
Wednesdays and Fridays, Mi Mi's has hearty
home-cooked
specials such as chicken and dumplings. All the
food, including the desserts, are homemade. Prices are moderate and the
presentation is beautifully displayed on a variety of mismatched dinnerware.
Mi
Mi's Cafe serves private groups and parties with reservations. It also
showcases an occasional
fashion show for the local ladies. We were warmly greeted as we entered the restaurant.
The waitress encouraged us to move around
and explore the whole house. The bungalow is creatively decorated by local Bed & Breakfast owner, Sandra
McAllister. Floors and walls are painted, some with a brick effect, some
with tissue paper. An interior door was painted with a window scene and
gave the close quarters and more airy look.
The Garden Room's mural was painted by Debbie McBride, a local art
teacher at
the DAR School.
Not
many restaurants can brag about their bathroom, but Barbara wanted us to be sure
and have a look. It was a nice surprise with a gold sink, striped
wallpaper, and netting over the light fixture.
We
had a pleasant time in Grant and plan to go back and check out the rest of the
town soon. I hope to see you there, too!For
more information on Grant, check out the Grant
Chamber of
Commerce website.
