I was delighted to find that the 1987 book on North Alabama wildflowers has been reprinted. This gold mine of information was printed and sold as the first money-making project for the Huntsville Botanical Gardens.
With the warm climate and abundant rain, North Alabama is blessed with a great variety of wildflowers. Wild Flowers of North Alabama is designed to help the amateur gardener enjoy a walk in nature or assist in a more serious study. It comes in a handy, easy-to-carry size that is ideal for the hiker, biker, or walking enthusiast to tuck in a backpack or tote.

The book contains beautiful photographs and easy identification of 124 different plants. The book is designed by color and grouped by blooming season. The scientific name, description and remarks on the plant's utility, history, and folklore are included for each flower making this an informative and easy-to-use guide for our region of the country. There is an index in the back of the book, drawings of flower parts, a composite flower, leaf arrangements, and leaf types. The back cover of the new edition showcases the 100-year old dogwood tree at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens.

The original book sold out and has been unavailable for many years. It was printed in Austria with the support of the late Inge Paul, a long-time Botanical Gardens supporter. Bonnie Perkins Tondera is responsible for compiling Wild Flowers of North Alabama. Mike Gibson, Curator at the Botanical Gardens, supplied the botanical identification. He and Laura French Clare wrote the text. Dorothy and William B. Threlkeld assisted in the selection of slides and in editing. The beautiful photos were taken by Susanne K. Dabney, Carol Bishop Hipps, Mike Gibson, Dorothy Keebler, Harry and Brenda Kennane, Edward J. Stinnett, William B. Threlked, George Thurlow, Bonnie Tondera, and Margaret Vann.
Anyone who appreciates and enjoys nature and lives in North Alabama would welcome this little book as an addition to their personal library.
