Coyote on a Fence is an intriguing play written by Bruce Graham. It won the 1998 Lois Rich and Richard Rosenthal Award, given annually to the Best New American Play. The Renaissance Theatre has taken on the challenge of offering this thought-provoking, and at time, shocking work to the Huntsville public.

Headlines daily scream to us about murder and violence. In Coyote on a Fence, the cast of four bear the burden of making us think about the unpleasant issues involved with capital punishment. If we knew the inmates personally, would we want them to be punished? Can one be innocent though proven guilty? Murder and death fascinate us and this play makes us think.

Coyote on a Fence tells the story of two inmates, political activist John Brennan and white-supremist Bobby Alvin Reyburn. They are on Death Row awaiting their executions. John is a literate and articulate man who plays chess by mail and publishes a newspaper from his cell called The Death Row Advocate. It is this hobby that attracts the ire of prison officials, as well as the attention of Pulitzer Prize Winning New York Times reporter Sam Fried. The cast rounds out with a prison guard named Shawna DuChamps, a hard-nosed woman who has seen everything and, although she denies it vehemently, is still affected by the row.
