Lunch boxes bring back a lot of memories to many older Americans. It reminds us of the days when the lunch box you chose was one of your biggest decisions when getting ready to go back to school in the fall. Now the Smithsonian Instituion Traveling Exhibition Service has put together a fun exhibit that shows the variety of lunch boxes over the years. Lunch Box Memories is on display at the Huntsville Museum of Art through June 15, 2003.
The exhibit includes lunch boxes from 1890 through the 1980's. Lunch boxes originated around the turn of the 20th century in the form of empty biscuit containers or tobacco cans that workers toted to work and eventually, children took to school. In 1910, a rivalry began between the two major manufacturers of lunch boxes, American Thermos and Aladdin Industries.
