The famous Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail literally begins in our own backyard here in Huntsville. The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is the largest golf construction project every attempted any where in the world. It stretches from one end of Alabama (our end) to the other, with 378 holes of world-class golf at eight sites. The Trail was named by Frequent Flyer Magazine as one of the world's top 10 trips.
Robert Trent Jones, Sr. considered designing the Trail for Alabama the crowning glory of his career in golf design. The Trail was funded by and is run by the Retirement Systems of Alabama. The main objective was the utilize the Trail "to help expand tourism, recruit new industry, and attract retirees, thus strengthening the state while improving the quality of life for all Alabamians."
The Robert Trent Jones Trail was named as among the Top 50 Golf destinations in the world by Golf Digest magazine. One of the features of the Trail is the unique design at each site and the ability of the golfer to travel from one course to another within a relative short amount of space. Many golfers buy a Trail pass and play the whole Trail on their golf outings.
The Hampton Cove site here in Huntsville has three courses: The Highlands Course, The River Course, and a Short Course. All three courses have very different features. On the Highlands Course there is an old mule barn that was left standing near the fifth holes. Thousands of Japanese black pines, oaks, dogwoods and crepe myrtles add to the landscape of the Highlands Course. The Highlands Course emulates a Scottish Links.
