A little over 100 miles from Huntsville is one of the eleven state parks in Alabama--Cheaha State Park. The Talladega National Forest is located just south of Anniston, Alabama in Delta and is a part of the Appalachian Mountains. Cheaha State Park is atop Cheaha Mountain, the highest peak in Alabama at 2,407 feet. Appropriately, Cheaha is the Indian word for "high."
Cheaha State Park has been in operation as a state park since 1933. The official opening date was June 7, 1939. The ground work was installed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and included roads, cabins, Bald Rock Lodge, the observation tower, picnic shelters, hiking trails, lake, beach, bathhouses and other recreational facilities. In 1973, a restaurant, hotel and chalets were added to the park.
Cheaha State Park is handicap accessible. Pets are allowed in the campgrounds, but not in the hotel rooms, cabins or chalets. For more information, call 256-488-5111 or for reservations (only) 1-800-846-2654. Nationwide, you can call 1-800-ALA-PARK.
Cheaha
State Park is a spectacular place to spend an afternoon or a week enjoying the
beauty and wonder of Alabama's natural resources.
