"Sweet Home Alabama" Spelled Out in Corn
On Highway 72 East of Huntsville on Brownsboro Road (behind the Brownsboro Post Office), you can take your family for a good time working your way around the cornfield during the day or treat your teenager to a spooky time at night. The Cornfield Maze opens Friday, September 10 and runs until November 14. The Maze is open from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sudays. Special hours for opening on October 30 is 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on October 31st.

If you like getting scared, the Maze offers "Haunted, Creepy Corn" after dusk on Oct. 1,2,8,9,15,16,20,21,22,23,27,28,29,30, and 31. Other special events include "Corn Cob" Launching at $1 per shot and a hay ride around the outside of the Maze and across the road and around a lake. At great deal for $2, with children 5 and under free with paying adult. If you don't think you want to get lost in a Maze, just the hayride sounds awfully nice!

If you've never been in a Cornfield Maze, don't worry. The path is marked out for you with wired netting to keep you on the right or almost-right path. There are also 20-30 Maze employees stationed throughout the field to assist you if you want to get directions or need help in any way. The Maze should take you between one and two and a half hours, depending on how lost you want to be! Brandon, part-owner of the Maze (with Stan & Lorraine Summerlin) gave me a personal tour of the Maze and said that he can do it in approximately 25 minutes--but then, he laid it out. I trusted him and followed along blindly. We did get out pretty quick.

The Maze in Brownsboro has been in operation since 2000. Crowds number about 13,000 a day and ages vary from the young to the old. In 2003, heavy wind and rain leveled 70% of the Maize and field had to be repaired.

If you are like me and are wondering how in the world they are able to make fancy designs in the cornfield, it's easier than you think, but still very hard work. I thought the farmers planted it in the design (okay, so I'm not very smart!). Actually, they plant their field of corn first, create a design, and then get help from the MAiZE people on the measurements for cutting paths (using lawnmowers) to make their design. Work began on the Maze on July 1st and has continued every day (weather permitting) since then.

If you'd like to get "lost" in the Maze for a few hours, then the Maze near Brownsboro is just outside Huntsville and a great adventure for the fall season. For more information, call 256.508.4626 or go to Cornfield Maze.
