In 1950, the United States Government transferred the rocket program from Fort Bliss, Texas to Huntsville, Alabama. Werhner von Braun, considered the father of space travel, and 50 other German rocket scientists moved to Huntsville and started work on the space program that eventually was credited with putting man on the moon. This made Huntsville the fastest growing city in the 1960's. In 1977 President Ford awarded von Braun the National Medal of Science. These Germans plus many more who have come to live in Huntsville because of work or school, help to make Oktoberfest a popular place to visit each September.
Oktoberfest is a weekend event filled with activities, good German food, and entertainment that not only the Germans in Huntsville enjoy, but all the people living in North Alabama find interesting. With the weather cooperating finally after Hurricane Ivan settled down and left North Alabama, the 2004 Oktoberfest was a huge success. Check out the sites and activities that Flat Stanley experienced at his first ever Oktoberfest.
