WaterWorks- -The Coolest Place in Huntsville

Kids Get Kicks Out of the Leaks at the Garden

By Jean Brandau, About.com

The Huntsville Botanical Garden and their marketing director Sharon Jordan have come up with yet another great idea--this time it involves water...lots and lots of water! In 2003, the kids had fun playing in and on the creative treehouses that the Garden displayed from different groups and organizations. Some of those treehouses involved water, and that gave Ms. Jordan an idea as she watched them play--why not have different water activities for the children? Most of the treehouses that contained water displays are back--along with some additional treats for the young and old...well, anyone whose hot and young-at-heart.

Memorial Day 2004 through September 6, 2004, visitors to the Huntsville Botanical Garden can get refreshed with seven different "WaterWorks"--each one designed and installed from seven different groups or individuals. The Garden is awash with "liquid gold" during the long, hot days of summer here in Huntsville, where temperatures can rise over 100 degrees.

The Huntsville Utilities has built a full-scale water tower that will deliver gallons of water--but not through the traditional plumbing! Children can design their own fountain at the Tool Trough or get a good soaking in the Sloshy Saucer. Families will love Gusher Alley with its motion-activated gushers. You can climb through the Rock Garden where water squirts out of solid rock. The Fabulous Flying Fortress is armed with a water cannon and Area 51 has a creepy swirling mist.

Make sure to take time to visit the Garden with your children or grandchildren and enjoy some wet and wild times this summer!
