Guide Review - Book Review: The Keeper's Son

Since I spend most of my time online, I rarely have time to relax with a good book these days. It was a special treat for me to chisel out a block of time to dig into Homer Hickam's The Keeper's Son, an intriguing book based on a true, but little-known, story about World War II. Hickam has done a superb job of telling his story and keeping the reader engaged.

I think this might have been my first novel about WWII. I have to admit, WWII, lighthouses, coast guards, torpedoes and such wasn't on my Top Ten List of subjects to read about. I think that's why I was so captivated and intrigued with The Keeper's Son. I quickly became mesmerized and engrossed in this book. I absolutely loved the love stories. Hickam must have put them in for us women. I thought maybe it was a little too romantic for guys, so I had my brother-in-law read it to get the male point of view. He loved it, too!

Huntsville's own New York bestselling author, Homer Hickam says of The Keeper's Son: "I wanted to bring back to life a time when our country was under attack by outside and nearly incomprehensible forces, very much as we are today. Not too many people know it but there was a huge and terribly bloody battle along the eastern shore of the United States in 1942. Over 400 of our ships were sunk by U-boats and there were also landings made up and down the coast."

Hickam has painted a vivid picture for us and weaved an incredible story. I can't wait until it comes to the big screen some day!
