Hello and welcome to "The River City Review" your update on Decatur, Alabama happenings. I am Edith Hobbs and I have lived and worked in The River City since 1981. Although I will always be a native-born Texan, I consider my home now to be here. I am excited about the opportunity to brag about Decatur and post updates on what is happening here on the banks of the Tennessee. As my hobby is working behind the scenes with our community theatre and arts groups, please bear with me if my news sometimes leans in that direction.
The Princess Theatre , Center for the Performing Arts is a great treasure in our city and seems like my second home. The story of this historical theatre as well as the season postings can be viewed on their website at princesstheatre.org .
Neverland is coming to the Princess Theatre with the dramatic (non-musical) version of "Peter Pan" produced by Darren Butler and BackStage Productions. All our favorite characters are there - Wendy, the Lost Boys and that crowd-pleaser, Captain Hook. Shows will be Friday and Saturday Aug 5 and Aug 6. Tickets are available by calling 308-2300 or at the door.
Betty Rocha will be directing The World Goes Round, a review of the music of Kander and Ebb for the Winter Fund Raiser for the Princess in mid-February 2006. Auditions are announced for Thursday, August 18, at 6:30 pm. at Ft. Decatur. Be prepared with a song that shows your vocal range, and ready to do some simple dance steps.
Don't miss the Monday Night Concerts at Rhodes Ferry Park on the banks of the Tennessee River continuing through Labor Day. A great opportunity to bring a picnic (no alcohol please), some lawn chairs or a blanket, and enjoy good music by the river - with nearby playground for the kids. Music starts about 6 every Monday night, weather permitting.
School starts the second week of August - Commuters on Highway 31 by the Lurleen Wallace Center need to be fore-warned - the Speed Limit will be School Zone effective every morning from about 7 - 8:30 am and afternoon from about 2:30 to about 3:45. Students from Gordon Bibb will be attending school at the Wallace Center while the new school is being built this year. Look for the Signs -- Slow down and watch out for the school kids -- expect a meeting with that nice man from the highway patrol if you don't obey the speed limit!
