W.C. Handy Home & Museum... "Quilt Challenge '05"...

W.C. Handy Home and Museum

Come celebrate W.C. Handy's 132nd birthday on Wednesday, November 16, at the W.C. Handy Museum , 620 West College Street, in Florence. The "Father of the Blues" - William Christopher Handy - was born in Florence on November 16, 1873. He was a band conductor, solo trumpet performer, author, and composer.

The Celebration will be from 11:30am to 1:00pm and is free and open to the public. Birthday cake and other refreshments will be served. The Mississippi a cappella quintet, the Jones Sisters, will perform on the front porch of the cabin. The Jones Sisters really are sisters. Their rendition of "Take My Hand Precious Lord" has been featured on two movie tracts - A Time to Kill and The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

November 16 also marks the opening of the Shoals Piecemakers Quilt Guild's "Quilt Challenge '05" with the theme as "When Life Gives You Scraps - Make a Quilt!" Each quilt must portray the theme, include at least one traditional quilt block, a piece of the challenge fabric, and follow measurement guidelines. The Guild members chose the Best of Show, Best Use of Theme, and other awards, but the public chooses the People's Choice Award by voting for their favorite quilt. The exhibit will be on display through December 14th at the Kennedy-Douglas Center for the Arts, at 217 East Tuscaloosa, Florence. Call (256) 760-6379.
