The River City Review - September 2005

Decatur Events & Happenings

From Edith Hobbs

It is hot, hot, hot in the River City -

Many of us in Decatur lost our dear friend, Brooke Hill, to ovarian cancer last year. Brooke was very active in the restoration project of The Carnegie Visual Arts Center. The Center is currently featuring an exhibit in Brooke's memory--"body image | body essence: viewing ovarian cancer through the art of sculpture" by John Magnan through September 10, 2005. His work is dedicated to his wife - a survivor of ovarian cancer. The Carnegie Visual Arts Center is located at 207 Church Street NE. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Contact number is (256) 341 0562. To learn more about this exhibit, visit www.bodyimage-bodyessence.com.

Congratulations to Decatur General Hospital on its 90th anniversary this year.

A no-kill pet rescue home has opened in Decatur at 1608 Fourth Av SE - The Animal Friends Humane Society shelter will consider pets for a temporary stay until a new owner comes forward. Glenda Short, the manager, is providing a humane, no-cage if possible, environment for her fuzzy guests. This is a good alternative for those owners who are unable to continue to care for a much-loved pet that still has many years of love to give a human friend. Only those animals with a reasonable chance of adoption can be accepted, and they must have their shots and be neutered. If you are looking for a new pet friend, stop by and give your heart to one of Glenda's fuzzy friends.

For a fun time for all ages and lots of great food -don't miss the Decatur Jaycees' Riverfest BBQ Cook-Off at Rhodes Ferry Park on the River on September 16 and 17. Rhodes Ferry Park is on the southern bank of the River off of Church Street about 3 blocks west of the Holiday Inn. All money raised will go to local charities. This is a KCBS Sanctioned Alabama State Championship. Hours are 11 pm to 10 pm on Friday the 16th and 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday the 17th. Suggested donation is $3 for Adults and $2 for Children.. Don't miss this event - the best food around to purchase, music, children's events and all for a good cause.

It is Racking Horse time again September 16-24 from 6:30 to 10 pm each night at the Priceville Arena on Highway 67. I love to see these beautiful 4-footed athletics performing - Exhibitors are scheduled from about 30 states to show their beautiful horses at the Fall World Celebration. Contact the Convention & Visitors Bureau at 350 2028 for more information.

Make your calendar now to take a road trip to Hartselle the first week of October for Depot Days Festival . There will be Fun Runs, classic cars and trucks, antique tractors, lots of arts and crafts, mountains of food and music for every one. Can't wait to visit the funnel cake truck, myself. This originally started as the Mule Festival and has evolved into a wonderful annual event celebrating the founding of Hartselle.

School is back in session. Remember to obey all speed limits and school zone markers -particularly the new school zone in effect by the Lurleen Wallace Center on Hwy 31.

High school football is going strong -Let's hear it for the Decatur Red Raiders and the Austin Black Bears, for the Hartselle and Brewer and other Morgan County teams and Athens and Limestone County and Lawrence County teams --May they all have a winning season.

Morgan County has been named the Small Market of the Year by the Southern Business & Development Magazine . The State of the Year honor went to Alabama for the third year in a row. Our River City was recognized as the economic powerhouse of the region based on our natural sites for some of the country's larger chemical operations, the close proximity of the Tennessee River waterway, Interstate 65 and Huntsville International Airport, Calhoun's excellent training facilities, and the human resources that the local Chamber of Commerce develops.
