The month of July in the Shoals holds plenty for the music enthusiast. The W.C. Handy Music Festival, which is one of the biggest events on the Shoals calendar, takes place from July 24 - 30, 2005. W.C. Handy was born in Florence, AL and his birth home still stands. It is now a museum and will be open for tours during the festival. This year's kickoff concert held at the Alabama Music Hall Of Fame will feature the Commodoresand Eddie Floyd. The week long festival features more that 200 events and if last year's turnout is any indicator around 150,000 attendees can be expected. When you take a break from listening to the many musicians who will be performing at different venues throughout the Shoals, make plans to attend the Hot Jazz and Cold Lemonade reception at the Tennessee Valley Art Center to view the "Art Works '05"exhibition and see the music themed " Mostly Blues" exhibit at the Kennedy-Douglas Center for the Arts.
