Immensely loveable and loyal, Greyhounds, by nature, are quizzical, sometimes shy, very sensitive and surprisingly gentle. More people-oriented than many breeds, they tend to be quite social and love with their whole body, often rubbing like a cat. Those of us who are owned by a Greyhound affectionately call them Velcro dogs because of the way they like to lean against your leg. They are great cuddlers, yet are happy just being in the same room with their owner, keeping a watchful eye. Greyhounds are quite intelligent and respond well to obedience training. They also make exceptional therapy dogs due to their quiet, calm nature and their strong desire to please. There is an elegant nobility about the Greyhound that Ive not found in any other breed and Ive owned quite a few other breeds in my lifetime.
The Greyhound racing industry breeds approximately 50,000 puppies a year but only about 15,000 actually become racing dogs. Beginning their racing careers around 18 months of age, successful racers usually peak out around 3.5 years old. Most states dont race the dogs past 5 years old.
