Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Greyhounds

From Lynn Rader

Average Life Expectancy is 12-16 Years...

Bred to have streamlined bodies and narrow heads to cut the wind, Greyhounds can reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour, usually within two strides. Being members of the sighthound family, they hunt by sight rather than scent and can spot movement of something as small as a squirrel or rabbit half mile away. These purebred athletes enjoy many years of good health, with their average life expectancy being 12-16 years. The males range from 26-30” tall and weigh between 55 & 85 lbs. The smaller females average 23-26” tall and weigh in between 50 & 75 lbs.

Most people believe Greyhounds are very active dogs that require a lot of room and exercise. However, once retired, these ’40-mile-per-hour couch potatoes’ take retirement very seriously, sleeping up to 18 hours a day. Greyhounds are sprinters – not long distance runners. In a fenced yard, Greyhounds are quite happy making 2-3 laps around the yard. If a fenced yard is not available, a 10-15 minute walk 2-3 times a day suffices for their exercise. Many adopters who jog have gradually worked their Greyhounds into running several miles.
