In Ancient Times, Birth of Greyhound Second Only to Birth of Son...

Greyhounds have often been the subject of artwork, literature and advertising. Strikingly similar likenesses of Greyhounds are found in murals, paintings, Egyptian tomb etchings and even cave drawings dating back as far as 8,000 years. In fact, animal anthropologists generally agree that the Greyhound-type dog is one of the base breeds from which all domestic dogs are descended.

In ancient Arabian culture, most dogs were considered unclean and were avoided. Not so the Greyhound. Highly admired for their physical attributes and speed, the Greyhound was the only dog permitted to share their owner’s tents and ride atop their camels. The birth of a Greyhound ranked second in importance only to the birth of a son. They shared a similar stature in Persia, Rome and Greece. The Greyhound is the only breed of dog mentioned in the Bible (Proverbs 30:29-31).
