2009 Concerts in the Park Schedule

Monday Nights in Big Spring Park

Concerts in the Park is held on Monday evenings in downtown Big Spring Park and, occasionally, at Ditto Landing. It is a co-production of The City of Huntsville through its Division of Recreation Services and Landscape Management and The Arts Council, Inc.

Every Monday night, audiences can enjoy an eclectic blend of tunes, from jazz to rock-n-roll. The majority of these free concerts are held at the south end of Big Spring Park in downtown Huntsville. Concerts are open to the public and run from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Those who attend are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs and a picnic. Snacks and soft drinks are also available for sale.

In the event of inclement weather, decisions regarding cancellations (or relocations) of Concerts are not made until between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. Listen to your local radio or TV stations for cancellation.

June 1
at Big Spring Park
6:30 pm--HOT SOUP, “…a delicious melting pot of infectious blues and funk with all the right ingredients of Janis Joplin, Bobby Womack, and Alabama blues mixed just right for your grooving pleasure…”
7:20 pm--DISCOASIS,Local thirteen-member band offering disco or, specifically, “all the best 70’s groovin’ songs!” They’re renowned for “getting people on their feet, dancing!” through such hits as “That’s the Way (I Like It),” “Rock the Boat,” and “Do the Hustle.”

June 8

6:30--CRISTINA LYNN & CHUCK RUTENBERG, Two North Alabama natives, Lynn (vocals) and Rutenberg (acoustic guitar, vocals), performing modern country songs, including original music and the beloved hits of Patsy Cline.
7:20--Reunion, This popular eight-piece group specializes in oldies (50’s-60’s-70’s) and has been a Panoply and CitP mainstay for years

June 15
Armed Forces Week
at JOE DAVIS STADIUM and will end with a grand fireworks display
6:30 pm--JUICE, funk band that’s opened for such acts as Kool & the Gang, Boyz II Men, and Hootie and the Blowfish. This “solid groove machine” puts the FUN in FUNK—“it’s like electricity…turning on the juice”—and includes Bobby Taylor (vox/drums); Hunter Copeland (electric guitar/vox); Danny Beeler (keyboards/vox); Mike Lew (sax/harmonica); and Leonard Adams (Bass/Vocals).
7:20 pm--Military Band TBA.

June 22

Gospel Music Night
6:30 pm--MIKE COLE and THE CONVINCED, specializing in traditional gospel with contemporary arrangements. They play music “to bring honor and glory to our Lord,” have been together for one-and-a-half years, and include Mike (Guitar); his son, Derek (Drums); and Dwight Kennedy (Bass).
7:20 pm--WING & A PRAYER, contemporary Christian/family-friendly rock group, hailing from Huntsville’s parishes of Holy Spirit and Good Shepherd, includes Theresa Bayer, Michelle Omenski, and Monica Beck (vox); Paul Hession (guitar/banjo), Dave McKinley (guitar), John Omenski (drums/percussion), Bob Hiser (bass), and Todd Moss (keyboard). FREE & Open to the Public! Blankets, lawn chairs, & picnics encouraged.

June 29

Jazz Night
6:20pm--TRIO EL CAMINO , the premier organ combo in the Huntsville metro area, consisting of Newt Johnson (organ, vox), Jim Cavender (guitar, vox), and Mike Dendy (drums, vox), Trio El Camino plays a wide variety of styles (neo-soul, Americana, lounge – covers and originals) that all melt together to form a unique, soulful, rockin’, swingin’, funky sound.
7:20 pm--COOLBONE BRASS BAND, In their mission “to add to the world of music by inspiring the general public to become more aware of New Orleans’ great music and in appreciating ‘the arts’ in general, this unique band (saxophonist, trumpeter, brass player/pianist, tuba, lead trombonist/vocalist, snare drummer, bass drummer, and sometimes a parade grand marshal.) can perform a number of musical styles at any time.
