Samir from Huntsville Car Scene.com has been covering car and bike shows in North Alabama and Southern Tennessee for years. Here he shares his experience and photos at the Super Chevy Show at Huntsville Dragway on May 19-21, 2006. If you love cars, you'll want to check out his website!

If you've never heard of the Super Chevy Show or been to it, then you are in for a treat--a very large treat. This was my first attendance of this event and I have to say that it is definitely a must see. There is so much to see that it does take up an entire day, if not the entire weekend. From the midway full of various vendors, the swap meet area with great deals for the picking, to the show cars gleaming in the sun, and race cars roaring the background, this is a first class grade A fun event.

Some very pristine cars from the past completely took over the grassy parking beyond the paddock at the Huntsville Dragway. And many of these special cars were for sale. And while you were perusing the sea of cars and chatting with their owners, you could hear the roar of the races in the background as the cars sped down the track in less than 5 seconds reaching speeds in excess of 150 mph.

And let's not forget some of the feature drag races such as the Astro van that could do a wheelie down the entire length of the track at over 100mph and in less than 7 seconds. And then my favorite, the jet powered dragsters. With one of them, "Super Chief", looking just like a train, complete with headlight.

I've had the opportunity to see many amazing things in my years covering car and bike events, but nothing is as awe inspiring as those jet-powered cars. The sheer, raw power and improbability of putting a jet engine behind a person and racing 1/8th of a mile kept my jaw dropped for about 10 minutes. And even high up in the grandstands, you could feel the heat of these monsters as they screamed down the track in around 4 seconds. And in their wake, they seared the telephone pole behind the starting area pretty good.

One thing I will caution is that when you do go to an event like this, bring some earplugs. In the short bursts of noise from the higher horsepower cars and jet cars, I lost as much hearing as I normally would at a two hour concert. This is especially important for the kids.

I hope we can see more events like this come to the Huntsville area. It makes for a great weekend of events and definitely boosts our local economy.
