Keep the Kids Busy

Summer can be hot and very, very long if you're bored. Here's some free activities you might want to try to keep the kids busy and your budget in good shape during the long extended vacation from school. If you know of any more that are on a regular basis, send me a note at huntsville.guide@about.com and I'll be happy to add it to the list.

Madison Movie Madness
Free on Monday nights. 6 pm at Madison Public Library, 130 Plaza Boulevard. For more information, call (256) 461-0046 in Madison for dates.

Thursday Evening Concerts At The Library
Free. 6 pm at Huntsville Public Library, 915 Monroe Street. Come listen to the music that formed an important part of our cultural heritage.

Sidewalk Summer Arts Stroll
Third Thursday of Month through Sept.
Free. 4:30-8:30 pm at Sidewalks around the courthouse square, beginning at Harrison Brothers Hardware. Artists will set up tables to present their artwork & performing groups will be located along the way to provide entertainment. For more information, call (256) 534-8376.

Concerts in the Park
These summer concerts take place on Monday nights from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. downtown in Big Spring Park. Bring a chair and a picnic lunch or snack while enjoying a free concert outdoors.

Madison Gazebo Concerts
The Madison Gazebo Concerts occur each Thursday night, unless stated otherwise, in the gazebo in downtown Madison, beginning in early June, with the final concert in late August. Start time is 6:30 pm and concerts last approximately one and a half hours. Bring your chair and come on down to the gazebo for great family music, provided free by the Madison Arts Council..

North Alabama Railroad Museum
Free admission to the North Alabama Railroad Museum. Open to the public every day from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. for self-guided tours. Volunteers on hand on Wednesday & Saturday mornings until 1 pm. Train rides are offered about once a month and require an admission charge.

Vacation Bible School
Here's a listing of some of the summer programs for the kids. Some are in the morning, but there are some in the evenings to accommodate working parents. Be sure to check with each church to make sure there isn't a pre-registration requirement, fee or age limit and that there are still openings for your child.
