Sam Gunderson is from Reston, Virginia . Sam plays guitar and does vocals. He started playing violin when he was six. By the time he was ten, he switched to the guitar. He played bass in jazz band. When he was in 7th grade he started forming his own band and played other high school proms in the area. When he was 15 years old, he was touring. He went to the University of Miami for a couple years, majored in philosophy and history before getting bored and moving to Harrisburg, Virginia where he started his music career again.
Going back home, Sam started Sam Gunderson & Cactus Groove . After ten years of music, he decided on a leave of absence for an undetermined about of time, moving to Birmingham where his girlfriend has family. It was her stepfather who told him about Taylor Hicks: "there's this band that's really good." Sam went to hear The Taylor Hicks Band and then stayed to jam with them. Ona Watson from Ona's Music Room in Birmingham helped put Sam with the band.
