Civil War era Cabin on Burritt Guild's Tour

By , About.com Guide

Historic Gardiner Cabin
3101 Burritt Drive
The Gardiner Cabin (ca. 1845), a small one-room house named for the family that donated it, is typical of slave and share cropper housing in the Tennessee Valley. Because large families often lived in these small cabins, space was precious, and every effort was made to use it efficiently. A small partial loft, reached by a ladder, provided storage as well as sleeping space for children. And, the bed, built into a corner, occupied the smallest amount of space possible. The Gardiner Cabin originally stood on the Gardiner Farm off Hobbs Island Road overlooking the Tennessee River in southern Madison County, Alabama.
