New Kitchen Ideas on Annual Home Tour

More 2004 Kitchens on Tour

By Jean Brandau, About.com

The following kitchens are also on the 2004 schedule to be toured:

3. Joan Rice--24 Ledges Main
Casual elegance best describes this kitchen. Joan loves to cook so she wanted her kitchen to be attractive as well as functional. Even though the kitchen is not large, it frequently becomes the gathering place for friends, children, and grandchildren.

The kitchen area is connected to the great room by a bar with shutters that can be opened or closed depending on the activity in the kitchen. The entrance to the kitchen from the dining room is through a 7-foot butler's pantry which is open twenty-two feet to the ceiling of the second floor of the home. Over the butler's pantry is a large window and view of the stairway going to the second floor.

On one wall of the kitchen is a desk for the computer and shelves to the ceiling that contains frequently used recipe books. Cork board serves as the backboard for the computer. The other cabinets in the kitchen go to the twelve-foot ceiling. In the center of the kitchen is an island with a butcher block on the counter. Other features of the kitchen are the Thermador stove top and oven, plus a Kitchen-Aid convection oven, panel refrigerator, ice maker, and Kitchen-Aid dishwasher.
Colors for the lovely backdrop tile, countertops, hardwood and tile floors were chosen from the Hadley farm china which is displayed throughout the kitchen.

4. Fred and Vickie Zeigler--5 Crest Park Drive
The Ziegler's desired to create a home that would embrace family and friends in an atmosphere of great love and joy. As a team, Fred designed the residence and Vickie decorated an ambiance that would encourage and refresh. Rich hues of gold's, red's, and green's, with accents of highlighted black and defined white's, all inspire an encompassing feel.

The center island stands as the stabilizing fortress of the room. The black galaxy granite counter top is mirrored around the kitchen. The four antique Persian rugs surround the island to provide beauty and comfort for visitors to stand while being entertained. Two satin nickel rope light fixtures hang equally above the island and soft light glows from schoolhouse globes.

A cabinetmaker produced the maple kitchen cabinetry and applied a chocolate glaze to enhance the cordial feel. The rope design is again influenced around the room in the molding of the cabinets and the black oil-rubbed knobs bring easy access and subtle flair. The appliances in this kitchen are streamlined for Vicki's use: the commercial gas range with a backsplash of copper and stainless steel tile is flanked by the double ovens and warming drawer while the Sub-Zero refrigerator and the satin nickel faucet provide beauty and function.

It is, however, the massive kitchen hutch, centered on the main wall housed between the pediment shelves leading to the master suite and access to the utility area that brings a festive delight to the kitchen. The Zieglers discovered this design on the cover of a magazine and the cabinetmaker emulated the photograph. The fruit motif lavishly portrayed on the front panels was artistically painted by a close friend in Atlanta and brings a beautiful perception for all to feast upon. The exquisite galley gives open venue to the keeping room. A breakfast nook houses a circular table for the gathering of four and the dual service counter provides extra seating arrangements by three counter stools. The rich and softened fabrics continue a theme of comfort, beautiful decor, and a home featuring a love for open hospitality.

5. Mike and May Patterson--601 Eagles Ridge Place
The kitchen seems to be a place that both friends and family like to gather; therefore, the Pattersons decided to locate their kitchen in the center of their home.
Paired with the kitchen is a large breakfast room. Both rooms feature repeated arches, the same cabinetry and are elegantly appointed with antique rugs and furniture. The cabinets were custom made and feature inset doors, fluted, and custom turned moldings and bracket feet. The large island accommodates four barstools and is glazed in a distressed green. A travertine noce countertop completes the island.

Other finishes include a hand painted blue and white tile backsplash and crema marfil (tumbled marble) countertops. Century-old reclaimed heart pine floors add warmth and character to the rooms. The breakfast room fireplace is arched and made of antique brick. French doors flank the fireplace and lead to a large screen porch across the back of the house.
