3101 Burritt Drive
Meals House
With its massive stone chimney in the center and a pen, or room, on either side, this ca. 1845 house is a saddlebag plan. The style has its origins in northern Europe and, as the Meals would learn, is better suited to cooler climates. With its massive central chimney, heat from the kitchen fireplace spread throughout the parlor and upstairs bedroom in summer as well as winter. For this reason, saddlebag style houses lost popularity in the South as time went on.
