Floating, burned beds filled with azaleas, hollies, plum yew and mahonia still leave plenty of space for wide lawn areas. Beautifully shaped hemlocks give weight and structure--Susan wouldn't be without them as they remind her of her home in North Carolina. The ruby red Japanese maples with their delicate leaves but significant height are a startling contrast to the rich palette of greens provided by hollies, oakleaf hydrangeas and mass plantings of Otto Luyken laurels and loriope grass.Note how the espaliered magnolia and camellias cover wide expanses of wall space; their blooms scent summer evenings spent relaxing on the generous desk.
A garden this lovely deserves such a commodious deck--and come to think of it--so do those well-behaved and much-loved poodles!
