When the Irbys decided in the Spring of 2004 to down-size from the home where their children grew up, the priority was to be closer to the hub of the history and culture of Huntsville. Creative and structural challenges dominated the months ahead.

The key word for each day was "imagine". The home was half the size of their previous home, and the kitchen was small. Knocking out the wall between the kitchen and small den was the answer. The kitchen design features a double galley with a 10 foot island. The kitchen allows for traffic flow, more than one cook, and room for friends and family to be a part of the action.

Another priority was to bring in the light and charm of the garden. The answer was to add a wall of windows in the kitchen, to take out the outside wall, and add a bay window with French doors. Now there is not only a working kitchen, but also a keeping room leading to the garden.

Privacy between the homes has been given by a lattice topped fence and pergola. In the years ahead, Carolina Jasmine, clematis, and roses will be covering the pergola.
