More "Spirit of Christmas Past" on Next Page! This 1919 bunaglow is comfortable, simple, honest and just right. This house is one of the four bungalows to be built on the site of the Huntsville Female College. The college opened in 1851 and was in operation for 50 years. In 1895, a fire burned the buildingto the ground. A mere 23 years later this home was built by Mr. W.W. Esslinger. The craftsmen, or bungalow, style of building is more the result of elimination, not elaboration. By simplifying, the beauty of the architecture shines through. The end result is a cheerful, durable and practical home.
Typical of a bungalow style home is the full front porch, the decorative beams and the wide supporting columns. Inside there is an open feeling with plenty of light from the window. Original to the house is the beveled glass front door, side-lights and transom window, the built-in bookcases on each side of the fireplace, picture rail molding, the butler's pantry with built-in storage and the several French doors in the dining room and music room. Most of the rooms have the original plaster showing and paint glazes have been used to enhance the various textures.
For the past 15 years, the Sherman's have slowly rewired, rebuilt, stripped, sanded, painted and repainted the inside and outside of the house.
