On Sunday...Take a Cemetery Stroll...

2005 Pilgrimage #10
One of the most fun events in Huntsville every year is the Cemetery Stroll on the Sunday after the Historic Tour of Homes. Maple Hill Cemetery is the oldest and largest cemetery in the state. It was established in 1818 when the city of Huntsville purchased two acres of land from Leroy Pope. Maple Hill Cemetery now extends almost 100 acres and houses the graves of many historic and political figures. Located in the heart of downtown Huntsville, from Wells Avenue south to McClung Avenue, it includes more than 80,000 graves. Each year, these citizens from Huntsville's past, come alive and step outside their graves to tell their story of life in Huntsville's earlier days. On Sunday, May 8, 2005, 2:00-4:30 p.m., more than eighty costumed characters will enact historic figures.
