McKissack-Bentley Home

2005 Pilgrimage #2

410 Lincoln

This Italianate-style home merges masculine sturdiness with graceful details. Built in 1874, the home showcases a copper-roofed circular front porch held by slender Ionic columns. Of particular interest are the curved windows of the first and second floors and exquisite front doors with oval cut-glass panels. The blue painted porch ceiling was once a popular feature in days-of-old. It was believed that wasps would not build their nests within the porch because it would have appeared to them as blue sky.

The first owner of this property was none other than LeRoy Pope who purchased large sections of land in 1809. By 1874, Archie McCalley deeded the property to his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Robert Wilson who built the beautiful home.

In 1945, the McKissack family bought the home. In 1969, Dr. Bill Milton McKissack inherited the home where he and wife Mona lived until his death in 1990. Present owners, Samantha and Trey Bentley, have carefully restored this home to its original glory. An interesting carriage house with a two-horse stall is a reminder of a gracious past.
