This house, which once had a tower, is inspired by the square-towered informal houses of the Italian countryside. The romantic Italianate-style was popular in America from 1850-1880. The beautiful windows have one or two panes, and are crowned by elaborate moldings. An east side porch has been enclosed to become a lovely sunroom. On the west side is a porte cochere for carriage riders to arrive and depart while remaining dry. Inside, the original woodwork, molding, and marble fireplaces are excellent examples of this period of architecture. The ceilings are a towering 13 feet high and the floors are of sturdy heart pine, oak and ash.
The property was originally part of Popes Hill. It was deeded to Dr. Charles Patton, brother of Alabama Governor Robert Miller Patton. Charles deeded it to his son Oliver, an educator who operated the Oliver Beirne Patton Academy. It remained in the family for several more generations and is now owned by Dr. John and Kim Hartley.
This European-inspired home beckons visitors to dream of ancient Italian estates, yet its stately presence is right at home in Huntsville.
