First Presbyterian Church

2005 Pilgrimage #7

307 Gates Avenue

This church, built in the Gothic-style of medieval Europe, is the oldest Presbyterian Church in Alabama. Though early services were conducted by a circuit-riding Cumberland Presbyterian minister named Robert Donnell, the Reverend Gideon Blackburn presided over the church in 1818 and services were held in the original white frame building. The present building was dedicated in 1860.

The baptismal bowl and communion service, still in use today, were presented by the women of the church in 1839. In 1914, electric lights were installed and pew boxes with family nameplates were replaced with open pews. The stained-glass windows were dedicated at this time.
