Harris Hill Farm History...

In 1935, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Leven Powell, Sr. purchased Harris Hill Farm. Mr. Powell was a local commercial and residential road contractor who installed many of the first roads in the city, and he was also one of the contractors who constructed Lincoln Mills in Huntsville. The Powells had 2 sons and a daughter, and required a larger home to house their family. Therefore, they elected to tear down the 1800’s home and erect a new residence.

The Powells salvaged many of the materials from the 1800’s home, and incorporated them into the construction of their new home. Today, visitors to Harris Hill Farm can still see many of the hand-hewn rafters, large hand-carved stones, and hand-made brick from the 1800’s home. Most prominently, the front porch and side terrace are constructed from the hand-made square bricks of the earlier structure.

With the graciousness of Federal and Greek revival influences, Harris Hill Farm remained in the Powell family until 1978. Just last year, the home was purchased by its current owners, the Walker family, who also are long-time Huntsvillians.
