The History of Home Tour & the Luminaries...

One of the last events of the Huntsville Bicentennial Celebration will be the annual Twickenham Historic Preservation District Association’s (THPDA) Tour of Homes and Luminaries to be held Saturday, December 10, 2005 from 5:00-9:00 p.m. The First Methodist Church, 120 Greene Street, will be open from 4:00-6:00 p.m. for beautiful music and refreshments.

This event carries many traditions since its beginnings: The Twickenham Historic Preservation District, one of the South’s largest antebellum districts and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, was established in 1972.

In 1976, in order to pay for underground wiring and period lampposts, residents of Randolph Avenue had a summer street fair. One of the residents, Trice Hinds, suggested luminaries to conclude the day’s festivities, thus making him “Father of the Luminaries”. He was Chairman of the luminaries for many years and honorary chairman for many more and is still active each year.
