Franklin Street became the second street to have a street fair to fund lampposts and underground wiring, but instead of a summer fair, it was at Christmas. Carolers and music, people in period clothes were added and thus the tradition began and each street takes its turn. The first candles used were any type that residents had availabletea candles, burned down tapers or colored candles no longer used. Since 1980 when 1,500 candles were ordered, Gay Money is still responsible for the growing order amount that now stands at over 5,000. The same source--candle-maker, Lamar Sloan, has fulfilled the expectations all these years for the wonderful Holiday event. Another original participant is Julia Wynn King who has been the publicity chairman for this event since its inception and is still providing the service. East Clinton Elementary School has remained the festive meeting place where the sand is placed year after year. The morning of the event, families come to fill the bags with sand and candles, load their vehicles and set out to line their respective streets for the beautiful spectacle it becomes!
