The inspiration for the design is drawn from local examples of architecture dating from before the Civil War. The symmetrical, box-like form with end-wall chimneys is typical of houses built in Huntsville between 1815 and 1830.
The unusual entrance porch, combining Ionic columns and Doric pilasters is adapted from a plate in Asher Benjamin's The Architect, or Practical House Carpenter, a guidebook dating from 1830, and known to have been used by Huntsville's antebellum builders.
