518 Adams Street – Pynchon-Powell-Dorning Home

518 Adams Street – Pynchon-Powell-Dorning Home

This home was built soon after 1835 by Susan Clarke, widow of William Clarke, who was once a captain in the famous Virginia militia, the Richmond Blues. It was subsequently owned by Pamela Bibb, wife of Thomas Bibb, second governor of Alabama; Margaret McClung, widow of Colonel James W. McClung; and John J. Fackler, cotton commission merchant of New Orleans. Mr. Fackler enlarged, remodeled, and redecorated, making the home into a nineteen room mansion.

Many parties, masquerades, and cotillions were held in this spacious home. After the death of Mr. Fackler and his wife, the home came into the possession of Sarah Pynchon, daughter of the Facklers and wife of Dr. Pynchon. The house was sold in 1942 to Mr. Dudley Sale Powell. The Dornings purchased the home in 1991.

Unusual features are: double entrance doors, spacious hall inside, and winding stairs. From the first floor hall, the railing of the third floor can be seen. To the right are double parlors almost identical in size with white marble mantels and black Italian marble mantels in the library and guest bedroom.

Continuing the tradition of gracious entertainment, the home has been the seventh Designer's Show house fundraising project for the Women's Guild of the Huntsville Museum of Art and has been featured on the Spring Pilgrimage.
