Features & Stories About Life in Huntsville

2003 Huntsville Articles

By , About.com Guide

There's always something going on in Huntsville and I usually try to get to most of the things and take my camera with me. Come along with me as I explore North Alabama attractions and entertainment around the Huntsville area.

12/18/03 Day Trip: Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding House
It doesn't take Huntsville residents long to find out about the exceptional dining experience just 45 minutes north of town in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Many are more than willing to make bi-monthly trips north to sit at the dining table of Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding House and eat family-style home cooking.

11/27/03 Theatre Review: "Jesus Christ Superstar"
Broadway Theatre League is bringing "Jesus Christ Superstar" to Huntsville during the Thanksgiving holiday. Music is by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics are by Tim Rice. This record-breaking musical retells the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The production has been revived with a modern context--no cast sporting the tie-dyes and bellbottoms of past productions.

11/11/03 Theatre Review: "My Fair Lady"
Ars Nova is bringing this delightful musical to the Huntsville stage under the direction of Ginger Beazley. Face2Face Improv director Eugene Banks is changing his usual comedy act for the lead as Professor Henry Higgins. This is a great version of this popular show; read my review along with photos from the show.

11/09/03 Buck's Pocket State Park near Lake Guntersville
One of the great things about Alabama is that it is easy to enjoy nature almost all year round. Fall is a wonderful time to travel around the state and enjoy the autumn colors and the last good days of weather. Alabama is known for its wonderful state parks. Buck's Pocket State Park, located in Grove Oak near Lake Guntersville, is only one of 24 state parks in Alabama.

11/06/03 Theatre Review: "Shirley Valentine" Finds Herself Onstage
The Renaissance Theatre is presenting a one-woman show on its stage November 7-15. Shirley Valentine is a rather ordinary middle-class housewife. As she prepares dinner, she ruminates on her life, talking to the wall about such subjects as her husband, her children, her past and an attractive offer she has received from a girlfriend to go with her to Greece in search of romance and adventure.

11/04/03 The Nina Docks in Guntersville
The replica of the Nina visits ports around the country and allows schoolchildren and curious adults to experience what life for Columbus must have been like. The Nina was last in Alabama in 1999. While here, two Alabama men joined the crew--Adam Mashburn from Huntsville and Wade Eck from Florence. This is the last year that the Nina will be visiting other ports.

11/01/03 Theatre Review: "Death By Chocolate"
The Renaissance Theatre has a new stage downstairs called The Alpha Stage. Criss Ashwell is producing and directing the first show in the new theatre. "Death By Chocolate" is sure to get ever chocolate lover's imagination going. Bake sale during intermission benefits Food Line of Huntsville.

10/31/03 Theatre Review: "Communicating Doors"
This hilarious British farces is one of my favorites. Theatre Huntsville is presenting "Communicating Doors" through November 8th. I'll be reviewing it tonight and have my photos and comments up sometime Friday.

10/30/03 Art Exhibit: "My Reality" Features Japanese Animation
The Huntsville Museum of Art has a very colorful and playful exhibit up now for all the art lovers in North Alabama to view. They are also offering a series of three films over the next three months featuring Hayao Miyazaki's work. He is considered the "Walt Disney of Japan."

10/23/03 Day Trip: High Falls
This picturesque spot in DeKalb County has been described as "a surprise of nature" and "Alabama's best kept secret." If you haven't been to this Northeast Alabama nature park, you might want to think about visiting soon.

10/22/03 Theatre Review: "Miss Saigon"
The Broadway Theatre League's current selection is the best show in three years. Don't let this new Broadway production of "Miss Saigon" leave town without seeing it for yourself. Everything about this show is superb: the acting, the lights, the costumes, the music, and the technical effects.

10/18/03 Huntsville Gem & Mineral Society Rocks!
There's a club in Huntsville dedicated to the study of mineralogy, geology, paleontology and lapidary arts. At a recent convention a dining table made up completely with rocks and minerals that look like real food was highlighted.

10/15/03 Scarecrow Trail Blazed with Creativity
This year there are over 70 scarecrows and I'm sharing photos of over half of them with you.
