By , About.com Guide

A Taste of Hawaiian Festival was founded in 2001 in Huntsville by Rosie Douglas. The proceeds from the event go to the Huntsville Hospital Foundation Breast Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society. The goals of the festival include:
  • Continue to bring Breast Cancer Awareness by providing a representive from a local hospital to answer questions.
  • Continue to donate the proceeds to the Huntsville Hospital Foundation and the American Cancer Society.
  • Set up programs for Breast Cancer patients and their families.
  • Set up scholarship programs for Breast Cancer family member who can't afford to pay tuitions.
The festival was started in honor of family members, friends, women and men who have battled breast cancer. It also is an opportunity to give the Huntsville community a little taste of the Hawaiian culture. Ms. Douglas says, "I wanted to bring cultural awareness because breast cancer has no color. It strikes people of all races. It's devasting to see a family struggle when a spouse or single parent who has breast cancer loses their job or can't work because of this deadly disease."

The annual event is held in May or June at the Big Springs International Park-East. In 2005, other cultural dancers also participated at the festival. The festival includes Hawaiian Dancing by Hawaiian Fun Polynesian Dance Troupe, Hawaiian Music, Hawaiian Best Dressed Attire, Caribbean Dancing, India Dancing, Fashion Show, Hula Hoop Contest, and the Limbo Contest.
